About the Concert:
Join us in “Celebrating Women Composers in Classical Music,” an inclusive and diverse, multicultural performance of works of contemporary and pioneer women composers, featuring Alexandra Marie, Soprano. The concert features pioneer teacher and composer Nadia Boulanger, teacher Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein and Lili Boulanger, her sister and acclaimed composer of her time. Florence Beatrice Price (1887-1953) was an African American composer whose work was historically overlooked and has recently been rediscovered. Contemporary works will include pieces by Oscar and Golden Globe-winning British composer Rachel Portman, such as «There will be a Place for Us» (2023). Additionally, excerpts from «The Job» by award winner Melissa Murphy, a composer focused on political and gender equality themes, will be presented with the piece «It’s Just another Day» (2024). The program will also feature songs by notable women in 20th-century music, including Edith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, and Josephine Baker, highlighting their contributions to the field.
